Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century by King Vakhtang I Gorgasali. Over the centuries, the city was shaped by Arabs, Persians, Turks, and later became part of the Russian Empire in 1801. Each left a mark on its culture, and after gaining independence in 1991, Tbilisi became the capital of Georgia. Today, it is the country’s cultural and economic centre, home to nearly 1.2 million people, many of whom have moved here from rural areas. Tbilisi is a city of diversity, where different influences come together, including that of Michaela, a Slovak who has made her place in this vibrant capital.
